Climate Change
Goal: Educate health professionals about the potential impacts of climate change on human health.
The Earth is warming at a growing rate, which will likely increase the frequency and severity of environmental events such as flooding, heat waves, natural disasters, and wildfires. These climactic changes will potentially have profound effects on human health, specifically children and the socioeconomically-disadvantaged. NEEF joins in the movement to inform the public on the potential impacts of climate change on our health.
How Health Professionals Can Protect Public Health:
1. Diagnose and monitor health effects caused by global climate change.
2. Serve as credible experts to educate patients, families, and community members about increased disease risks from climate change, while fostering understanding and support.
3. Advocate for public policy to include public health measures for global climate change at both local and national levels.
4. Serve as leaders and provide guidance to communities adapting to climate change, as well as public and private sectors.
5. Help develop communities and methods of transportation that promote healthy lifestyles while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The following organizations support educating health professionals about climate change:
• American Academy of Pediatrics
• American Medical Association
• American Nurses Association
• American Public Health Association
• World Health Organization
"By educating physicians and other medical professionals on the negative health effects that global climate change can bring, we can be better prepared to provide patients with the best possible care.'' -Cecil B. Wilson, American Medical Association President-Elect*
