II. Nomination Essays

(The length of each response should be a maximum of 1800 characters.)

Describe how the nominee has demonstrated a creative or innovative approach to advance environmental education in the classroom, school, or school system. Has this approach served as a model for others? If so, how?

Describe the nominee’s effectiveness in engaging others in environmental education. For instance: Have fellow teachers of different subjects also incorporated EE into the classroom as a result of the nominee’s example? Has the nominee provided professional development in EE to fellow teachers? Has the nominee’s EE been endorsed or otherwise supported by the school or school district? Has the nominee worked with the broader community to encourage EE beyond the classroom?

How has the nominee tied environmental education to the school’s overall academic achievement goals in core subjects like science, math, and language arts? If possible, describe how the nominee’s approach has improved systems thinking and interdisciplinary learning, for instance helping students to make connections between environmental, economic, and social concerns.

Provide evidence that the nominee’s work has resulted in significant achievement beyond basic book learning. For instance, have the nominee’s students become directly engaged with a specific environmental issue? Have they addressed and/or provided solutions to a local environmental problem? If applicable, have any students pursued environmental careers as a result of the nominee’s efforts in environmental education?

Provide evidence of the growth of the program, both in terms of student interest and school and community support.

Has the nominee encountered significant challenges to teaching environmental education in the classroom? If so, how have they been overcome?

III. Three Letters of Support

Three letters of support are required: one each from an administrator, fellow teacher, and past or current student. Additional letters of support or other supplementary materials such as photos are welcome but not required.

All Letters of Support must include the following:

The reference's relationship to the nominee;
The reference's familiarity with the teacher and the work for which he/she is being nominated;
The reference's perspective on why the nominee's work is unique and innovative in the field of environmental education, and how the nominee might inspire others to teach environmental education;
The reference's signature.
